NAC Versus 802.1X?

I have question

what is the difference betwwen the NAC Appliance and what is called 802.1X? is 802.1x considered out-Band  in terms of the NACs?

This is probably more suitable in the Security forum.

NAC in general deals w/ posture assessment to ensure AntiVirus def & windows patches are up to date before allowing the hosts onto the network.

.1x is more an authentication thing, but can work in conjunction w/ NAC.
