Posting
One reason to do that, is because OSPF will route within the same area first. Having two ABRs share a link that's not area zero may allow that's area traffic to flow directly between the ABRs without needing to transit other non area zero routers. I.e. having just a direct area zero link doesn't guarantee that all traffic between the ABRs will use it.
