Router keeps shutting off on it's own and then turns back on its own aftre certain period of time...

Hi Guys,

I just start experiencing this weird behavior on my Cisco 2811 Router. Recently I added to my home learning lab Cisco 2811 with integrated Cisco EtherSwitch Service Module (nme-16es-1g-p). Router has just basic configuration to join my home network and it's mainly used to power via POE three 36XX series lightweight access ports that are part of my vWLC. Like I said this is my home lab that I put together to help study and to be able try things on real devices so no big deal, but still I'm wondering why this happening.

I'm using PRTG to monitor my network devices and some of the internal sensor via SNMP and there is nothing weird in the log prior to these unexpected shut offs. The temperature is around 32C and everything is in normal. The router usually shuts off 2-3x time a day some time it comes back after 30 minutes some times it takes up to 2 hours but eventually it will boot up on its own. I have another 2811, 2x 1811, ASA5510, 3750, 819, 2950 etc... that have been running continuously for months with out any issue.

Any idea how to trouble shoot this and is any of you ever seen something like that? Included 2day graph of the power supply and temperature where you can clearly see the area and time line when the router went dead

Regards,

Roman

What I'm saying is the power source feeding the router could be at fault or the power supply.

When I'm saying the power source feeding the router, I meant everything:  From the circuit breaker of the power outlet, to the power strip to the power cable.

Try moving the power feed source to another power point (without using the power strip board).

No crashinfo/crashlog file(s).  The "sh version" output shows the router could have a power feed issue or a power supply issue.

So what you saying is that it could be either the cable or integrated power supply since there is no power adapter like on smaller units just a regular cable? If that's the case I guess there is not much I can do.... maybe swap the switch module in to my second router since that's the only reason why I resurrected this router .... the other router has integrated WLC on the same spot but it's too old to use it and currently I'm using virtual WLC anyway. Thanks for quick respond :-)

PS: what abut actual "power strip" do you think that could be the failure point? It's just regular 5x power strip that you can get at regular store and currently there is at least 7 devices plug in to that strip

What I'm saying is the power source feeding the router could be at fault or the power supply.

When I'm saying the power source feeding the router, I meant everything:  From the circuit breaker of the power outlet, to the power strip to the power cable.

Try moving the power feed source to another power point (without using the power strip board).

OK thanks I will definitely try that and report back, for now I will mark this as correct answer.

Just reporting back... it was the router itself probably power supply or something on the MB. End up swapping the switch-port to another 2811 router and 0 problems  for 2+ months

Hello,

this sounds like a physical problem with either the external power source or cable, router power supply and circuit breaker, and router blower and fan, or inadequate ventilation or air circulation.

Here is a pretty good troubleshooting guide:

http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/routers/access/2800/hardware/installation/guide/hw/07_hw.html#wp1003699

I would love to troubleshoot but there is no warnings it just go dead... yes this particular router sits at the bottom of the rack but when I monitor my temperature it's all in normal. Either way I will look through that article.. thx
