static(default route) and dynamic (BGP) routing on same router

Hi There,

Is it possible to use static and BGP route on the same router.

My router is connected to 3 different networks, 2 of them supports BGP and 1 is used to connect to internet via static default route.

Is it possible to configure this on the same router

Regards,

Ermias W

Hello,

are you getting the default route from your BGP neighbor(s) ? You can manually configure multiple default static routes, if that is what you require. Post the configuration of your router.

Sure you can, but I suspect there's more that concerns you then just this question.  You also mention a static route to the Internet.  Are the two BGP connections Internet too?  Full routes or no/partial routes with or without a default (via BGP peer) for them too?

If the BGP routers are Internet, if BGP provided prefix is found in route table, it will be chosen over a default.  For example, if one or both BGP peers provide full Internet table, the static route should (in theory) never be chosen.

If BGP peers provide none/partial Internet prefixes with BGP default.  Believe which default is chosen depends on AD of static default route vs. AD of BGP default routes (all of which can be modified).

If all default routes are statics, choice would depend on cost of each static vs. the others.  Again, of course, default only chosen if no exact prefix match.

Hi
Thanks for the response
The BGP routes is not for internet but rather MPLS connection to Branch offices

Ah, in that case, wouldn't expect you to have an issue at all.

Agree with @Joseph W. Doherty and perhaps to state the obvious - as long as the BGP routes are only for networks/subnets known at Branch offices, and BGP does not advertise any default route, then your configuration of a single default static route and dynamic BGP routes should work just fine.
