Hello Everyone,
Almost all of my routers IOS are runnig version 12.4 (3825 & 2811)
Are there any benefits of upgrading the IOS to the latest version?
Any comments will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Alfred

Often, the only real need for later IOS versions is to use the features they provide. If no feature unique to a later IOS is needed, earlier is probably better, for several reasons. First, earlier versions without as many features tend to be smaller, i.e. less RAM demand, less flash needed to store it. Second, less "moving parts", i.e. less things to break. Third, older is often further along in its life cycle, i.e. possibly more stable.

In our network, we upgrade our appliance whenever we can. It is only then that we decide or discover a feature that we could and would use. Funny ain't it?

In my experience there are at least two factors that motivate us to update to a new version. First, as others have mentioned in this thread, is that there may be new features in new code that we want to use. The second factor is that there are security vulnerabilities in the older code we are running which are fixed in the new code.

Unless code has gone end of support, I thought Cisco generally fixed notable security vulnerabilities in other than latest version. Rick, am I mistaken? Even if I'm not, I recall I've seen some security vulnerabilities where the "fix" was only in newer code.
