Does anyone know if you can have a VPLS connection terminate on a Cisco (3800, 7200) router running dot1q encapsulation on a sub-interface?
For instance, a gigabitEthernet interface with a sub-interface configured with encapsulation dot1q XXX native where xxx is the native vlan of the VPLS link.
Is this possible, or even recommended?

Hello James,
if you mean to use the C3800 or C7200 to connect as CE node to a VPLS link provided by a Service Provider the answer is positive.
But C3800 or C7200 don't support VPLS as provider side device.
Hope to help

Yes, Giuseppe I was thinking of using the gigabitEthernet interfaces as a CE node connected to a VPLS link provided by an SP.
Thank you fr your help.
