SDWAN TLOC PREFERENCE | IPSEC PREFERENCE | OMP PREFERENCE

Hi all, i got confused with these Cisco SDWAN preferences. what is the difference between the TLOC PREF, IPSEC PREF and the OMP PREF.

As you can see on this document is not a matter of difference but a sequence of step in order to take devision on the routing.

  1. The Best-Path selection algorithm is performed only against valid OMP routes. Invalid routes are ignored. A route must have a next-hop TLOC that is known and reachable to be valid
  2. Prefer ACTIVE routes over STALE routes. A route is ACTIVE when there is an OMP session in UP state with the destination TLOC.
  3. Select the route with the lower administrative distance (AD) value.
  4. If AD values are equal, select the route with the higher OMP route preference value.
  5. If OMP preference values are equal, select the route with the higher TLOC preference value. (on vEdges only)
  6. If the TLOC preference values are equal, compare the route type and select the route based on the origin in the following order:
    1. Connected
    2. Static
    3. EBGP
    4. OSPF Intra-area
    5. OSPF inter-area
    6. OSPF external
    7. iBGP
    8. Unknown
  7. If everything up to this point is equal, select the route with the lower IGP metric.
  8. If the origin and IGP metric are equal, select the route coming from the node with the lowest router ID.
  9. If the router IDs are the same, a vEdge router selects the OMP route with the lowest private IP address

Hi,

IPSec (or GRE) preference is the same attribute for TLOC preference which is parameter of interface TLOC.

OMP preference is the parameter of OMP route.

Both TLOC and OMP preferences are used in OMP best path algorithm in order to select best route to destination.

But there is also IPSec (or GRE) weight which can be used in load sharing scenarios. This is not used in routing protocol, but used in traffic distribution (kind of mechanism).
