Symptoms
Upon starting ASDM 7.20(2) to connect to an ASA5508-X appliance, a dialog window appears stating that ASDM cannot load the ASA's configuration. Clicking OK closes ASDM, clicking outside the window allows ASDM to run, albeit in a degraded state.
Diagnosis
This issue only appears to occur - at least with these versions, for ASDM on Windows 11. ASDM on Windows 10 does not exhibit this behavior

Solution
This issue appears to be related to the Java run-time version loaded - the symptoms exhibit occur with any JRE version later than JRE8v301. Back rev JRE to JRE8v301 - still available from Oracle with an account, and ASDM will function normally on Windows 11.
