How to configure multicast routing on the Adaptive Security Appliance (ASA) firewall

Basic requirement for Multicast Routing:

• Every group member should receive only one copy of the m/c packet
• Nonmembers must not receive a copy
• A packet must not visit router more than once (no loops)
• Paths from the source to each destination must be optimal (shortest path)

Core issue

Multicast and VPN are features that are not supported in multi-context mode at this time. A  tunnel can be configured to pass the multicast traffic through.

Resolution

To setup the firewall to pass the multicast traffic through, refer to these documents:

• Refer to PIX/ASA 7.x: Multicast on the PIX/ASA Platforms with Sender on Outside Configuration Example for a sample configuration. In this example the multicast sender is on the outside of the security appliance and hosts on the inside are attempting to receive the multicast traffic.
