N1KV on ESXi 5.1 Hypervisor

Hi Everyone,

I have a basic question. I have a simple lab at home, a Dell PowerEdge 2950 running VMware (free) ESXi 5.1 Hypervisor & another Windows PC for vSphere Client.

So no vCenter, no vMotion..

Can I install the (free) Nexus 1000V 'Essential Edition' on this sever?

So far, all attempts have failed...

Thanks,

Ricki

No, N1KV requires a vCenter. You could build a vCenter VM and host it on the same host.

Thanks for your response!

Is vCenter under the same free license as the Hypervisor?

You can download a 60 day free trial from VMware

Just to add, when you install vCenter you'll want to install the trial version of Update Manager also.  vCenter uses VUM to push the N1K VEM agent to each host.  If you don't have VUM you can manually install the VEM agent as well.  Refer to the N1K Install Guides for details on both options.

Robert
