If after I save and activate a config and I do not like the naming convention for the aliases can I edit the config copy with the new aliases and activate the copy?
you just want to rename the alias ? You absolutely can, rename it and then re-active active zoneset. Zones will be automatically updated with the new alias, no need to manually modify them.
True for FC aliases, device aliases would require a 'device-alias commit' to make the change effective and to propagate it to the other MDS in the fabric.
