Hello All,
I am new to multicast traffic and need help with configuration. With virtualization (VMware) and hyper-converged appliances (vSAN, vMotion, MGMT, VM'’s), there is a strict network configuration guide. For the most part I have everything setup…..
- 4 separate VLANS (Managment, vSAN, vMotion, Virtual Machinces)
- Management VLAN is set to native vlan for tagging
- All ports are in trunk mode and all ports have each VLAN allowed on it
The issue I am having however, is how to properly setup IPv6 multicast for the management VLAN. Also, how to properly setup IPv4 multicast for the vSAN VLAN. And how to test/check if it is setup correctly.
Below are the requirements for these two VLAN’s. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
IPv4 multicast support is required for the vSAN VLAN. IPv6 multicast is required for the management VLAN. The network switch(es) that connect to appliance must allow for pass-through of multicast traffic on these two VLANs
- To handle vSAN IPv4 multicast traffic. Either limit multicast traffic by enabling both IGMP Snooping and IGMP Querier or disable both of these features.
- The appliance creates very little traffic via IPv6 multicast for auto discovery and management. It is recommended to limit traffic further on your switch to enable MLD Snooping and MLD Querier. If MLD Snooping is enabled, then MLD Querier must be enabled. If MLD Snooping is disabled, then MLD Querier must be disabled.
***NOTE***
I have no experience on how to even enable/setup multicast groups/list etc. I believe that is needed but I am not sure?
