Power off and power on a Cisco Switch

Hello guys

this is my first thread

Due a maintenance, we need to turn off for some hours our cisco MDS 9500 switches.

Does anyone have all steps needed to do this in a graceful way?

I've never needed to do this and want to take all precautions and preserve all active configurations after the power up

save running config to startup config and then ftp/sftp to an external location. There is no shutdown command per say, just flip the switches on power supplies.

I ran the command in one switch:

SWITCHHOSTNAME# copy running-config startup-config

[########################################] 100%

Just another question, why there is a command called "poweroff module", what is it used for?

to poweroff individual modules, other then to poweroff and replace specific modules i have not idea why someone would use it.

To "gracefully" shutdown a chassis-based switch, you do the following:

1.  Console into the switch;

2.  Save your config locally (and/or remotely);

3.  Issue the "reload" command and hit "enter"; and

4.  As soon as the console stops working, power down the chassis.
