zoning mds9216i

Hello,

My config is as follows eva3000-mds9216i-fcip-3750-1gbit link-3750-fcip-mds9216i-eva3000.

I want to make 2 virtual fabric's making zone's with each 2 legs of the eva300 on both sides in a zone together with a server.

I made a zone test with the host fcid, 2 fcid's of the eva local and the 2 fcid's of the eva remote,

created a zoneset with this zone, distibute and activate the zoneset, and the result is that the server can see the eva on the same switch but not the eva on the remote switch. deactivating the zoneset and the server sees everything.

What have I forgot to configure to get this zoning working?

no vsan configured other than the default vsan 1

-who can shed a light on this weird problem?

-jan

When you activate the zoneset, and then do show zoneset active, is there 5 pwwn/FCID's in the zone? Do they have a * next to the entries indicating those devices have registered with the nameserver?

Can you post the show zoneset active and show flogi data from both switches?

hello,

I don't have the active zoneset data, i'm not on site. Activating the zoneset disrupted an exchange servers datareplication group. I'll post 2 reply's one for each switch

I'm not sure which ports are the initiator and which are for the storage you want to get to. But one thing that is probably affecting you here is that you are running default permit. This means everything can see everything else. Once a device is put into a zone and that zone is in an active zoneset, it is removed from the default zone permit. So, verify in the zoneset that you activated that the HBA is properly zoned with the 4 ports of the EVA's that you want it to see.

Also to tblancha's point the the active devices will be disruptive when your making this zoneset active because you are are most likly moving them from default to a zoneset. Other item worth mentioning is that you are using FCID zoning, are you using persistant FCID's in the configuration, these can change if not.

your observation is correct, i know that, I think the setting is persistant.

I've also tried the following zone setup using the ports and the domain, but as you can gues it doesn't work either.

zone name test vsan 1

member interface fc1/1 domain-id 1

member interface fc1/1 domain-id 201

member interface fc1/3 domain-id 1

member interface fc1/3 domain-id 201

member interface fc1/8 domain-id 1

member interface fc1/8 domain-id 201

member interface fc1/5 domain-id 1

member interface fc1/5 domain-id 201

member interface fc1/7 domain-id 1

member interface fc1/7 domain-id 201

one other thing i've tried is making one great dpvm with all ports in it based on the pwwn's.

auto-learning set to on and the thing i've noticed is that showing the dpvm active database would show the local pwwn's with an asterix but the remote ports not, perhaps is that an indication what's wrong?

-jan

-jan

FYI, the Asterisk tells you the device that is zoned is no longer in the directory server on the switch (not FLOGI'ed) into fabric)

If there is no zoning in a two switch fabric should I see all the ports in the fabric with a sho flogi command?

On the other hand what could be the cause when I enable zoning and I don't see an asterix behind the remote ports. How can I troubleshoot that?

-jan

Here;s an update,

today I went to the customer, deleted all the zone info and started over with fcaliases, zones and a new zoneset, activated and distributed the zoneset and still no succes. Then I wanted to change the domain-id of the switch to reflect the switch name and i rebooted the switch and from that point the zoning was ok. I yjink the reboot did the trick

thanks guys for helping me out with this problem

jan

The ports 1,3,5 and 7 on each switch are the 4 eva ports, ports 6 are the management appliances ports 8 are the network storage routers and the rest are servers.

so i setup a zone using ports 1 and 3 both switches and port 6 as one sma zone.

-jan

Looking at what you posted and going by your description, when you activate this zoneset, it should allow connectivity to the disks. I still would like to see a show zoneset active when the ZS is activated. The best way is to run fcanalyzer filtering on the HBA in question and then activate the ZS and watch the RSCN's.

Monday I'll return to the customer to get some answers on your questions.

thanks,

jan
