5596UP layer 3 and static routing issues

Lets try this again.  First off, this is not spam.

BLUF:  static routes in pending, L3 module offline, LAN base and enterprise licenses installed, L3 not ready, Non-routable VDC mode.  Why isn’t routing working?

I’m working on stepping through online courses and to get better with Nexus switches, I’ve now got a 5596UP in my home lab.  I’m trying to integrate it with my lab server and home router and having an issue using it with Static Routing as I’ve done on my 3750G.  I started off with only the “ENTERPRISE_PKG” and the “FC_FEATURES_PKG” license installed, no “LAN BASE Services PKG”.  I was able to configure some SVI and got intervlan routing working for things directly attached to my switch using the SVIs connected but as soon as I attempt to hit anything outside the switch “upstream router”, that’s where I hit problems.

The switch is running on 7.1(4)N1(1) and I’ve noticed that my static routes all show as a pending status.  I also tried configuring and interface with an IP address but found the status as down with a message that L3 not ready.  I thought that possibly this was due to not having the LAN base service pkg license installed so I grab one of those.  The output was “Enable Layer 3” so I figured I was good to go. Wrong.  I now have no static routes at all.  A bit more digging and it seems that this might be caused by not having the layer 3 expansion module.  So, I ended up grabbing one of those and put it into module 3 while the switch was powered off.

With that layer 3 module (N55-M160L3-V2) installed, the output of the show module command says it’s in an offline state.  Unsure why that is, I grabbed an eval LAN enterprise services pkg license, but still, in a down state after a save and reload.  My SVIs all show as down with the message “Non-routable VDC mode”.  I can’t seem to figure out what the problem here is and would really appreciate some help as I’m new to the Nexus platform and probably missed something.

Really appreciate any help.
