Adding or replacing switch to a provisionned stack (3850)

If I have a provisionned switch in a stack that is NOT PRESENT (either from pre-configuration or due to switch failure), what will happen if I then add a brand-new out-of-the-box switch of the matching type to the stack?  Assuming the master is #1, and #2 has failed and been removed.

Will a new replacement then:

1. Become number 2 and assume the configuration for #2 that is present?

2. Become number 3, as #2 was preprovisionned, but this replacement switch defaulted to #1, in conflictt with the master, and is not already numbered 2

If scenario (2) above would be the "answer", then what is the minimum configuration needed to be applied to the brand-new switch, so that it would correctly assume the pre-provisionned configuration for the replacement switch as member #2 ?

If the replacement switch is the exact the same model found in the "switch 2 provision <BLAH>" statement then the replacement switch will automatically become switch stack member 2.
