ARP table being populated with address of a distant address not in local subnet

I am a little confused as to why I am seeing this. I have a 2960x that is showing an ARP entry with an address that is 2 hops away in my network infrastructure, which is not connected to the local subnet.

For example:

my local switch is 192.168.100.0/24 with an SVI of 192.168.100.1. I have an arp entry for a test box in 172.16.0.0/24; however, the switch is populating an ARP entry for my test box at 172.16.0.50/24 via the default gateway mac. Why is this? Is this a result of an proxy ARP? When I try to ping and populate the local ARP table of my 2960x, to a different test box at 172.16.0.60/24, I cannot populate the table. PING is successful; however, the layer2:Layer3 translation does not populate.

I am not sure why this is taking place.
