Creating Subinterface on a cisco 6509

hi

am trying to create a suninterface on a Cisco Catalyst 6509 swicth running on cisco ios.this is how am trying to do it but its not working.

conf t

int gi6/6

no switchport

exit

conf t

int gi6/6.1

the swicth is rejectting the command when i try to execute it.where am i goin wrong.
