FastEthernet Fiber in my Catalyst 6500

Hi guys,

I'll be running a Cisco catalyst 6500 series, with the following Fiber Line cards, WS-X6708-10G + WS-X6408A-GBIC.

Moreover I need to add a 100Mbit/s fiber module (it's for Internet Connectivity), is there any way to set it up ?

For the Gbic, I will use WS-G5484, which doesn't seem to accept to run @fastethernet speed. I can't see if an X2 TwinGig interface can run below Gigabit speed.

Any help greatly appreciated,

Hi,

What type of sup are you using?

@pwwiddicombe : other line cards, gonna be RJ45 cards :(. Yes, but I would like to avoid using a separate switch (which is the current configuration), less hardware & psu redundancy are required...Of course the supplier doesn't want to give a Gig port...

@Reza Sharifi Sup will be VS-S720-10G-3C.

Is there any GBIC Fiber module that could run at 100Mbit ? Maybe it could be compatible... I only found a 100Mbit Fiber in SFP currently.

If you only need one 100Mb fiber port, you have a couple of options:

1-Install this modules GLC-FE-100FX see table-5 in this link:

http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/products/collateral/switches/catalyst-6500-series-switches/product_data_sheet0900aecd801c5cce.html

2-If you have a copper module in your switch, you can get a media convertor and convert the fiber the provider gives you to copper and than connect the copper to your 6500.

HTH

If I read correctly (http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/products/collateral/switches/catalyst-3750-e-series-switches/product_data_sheet0900aecd805bbee3.html) it seems that X2 TwinGig converter supports GLC-GE-100FX=. So it should work for my config, right ? It's gonna consume one of my 10Gb port, but could work, right ?

Depending on what else might be available in the chassis, it looks like those 2 blades don't support 100 Meg.  Can your provider give you a Gig fiber port; and if not you may have to get either standalone transceiver (if you have a copper port available on the 6500), or a separate switch or router with gig and 100-Meg fiber interfaces.

sharifimr  thanks for link !

So the only way to get a FastEthernet fiber module on Catalyst 6500 series is to use the WS-X6148-FE-SFP :(. That's definitely not conceivable to add a 24/48 ports card to add just one link.

I also found this .pdf if it can help someone : http://www.andovercg.com/datasheets/cisco-sfp-fe-compatibility-matrix.pdf

So I'll have to play with other switches I already got in the network, also playing with VLAN.

Cisco sould really more think about FFTH/FFTB usually running (here in France) at less than Gigabit speed.

Thanks all
