I currently have a Cat5500 as my core switch and 10 -2948g's (two per floor), connected through fibre. We are purchasing new pc's that come with gigabit nic's and I would like to upgrade my network to allow gigabit to each workstation. Any suggestions?

Hello,
in order to provide true Gigabit connectivity to your PC's, you would need to install switches such as the 2948G-GE-TX, or the 3750. These have Gigabit copper ports, which can be used the same way as the standard 10/100 ports.

Should I leave the Cat5500 in place or upgrade to a 6500?

Hello,
to achieve Gigabit connectivity to your desktops, you do not need another core switch, unless you have a lot of money to spend and want to upgrade anyway, since the 5500 is end-of.life/end-of-sale.
