Hi Govindaraman,

It depends on what post and role you have been recieved. There are several positions be offered for network engineer to name a few;

1- NOC engineer

2- Network consultant/engineer.

-> NOC enginer daily activity will be to monitor the devices using any third party tools(Like Openview, Siebal, SolarWinds) and report the same to there peer who responsible to troulbeshoot the issue.

-> Network engineer will check all end to end connectivity issues. As you know there are quite many technologies (Routing &Switching , Security , Voice, Load balancer)... It depends on what role the engineer gets on to.

-> Some engineer gets to know complete end to end network design, configuration etc...

-> Some Network engineers get the job of implementing the network at various customer sites.

-> Some gets troubleshooting the technical issues on a day to day basis were customer logs a call and engineer will help them to resolve the issue what they are facing.

It will go on and on.....

Hope this might have given you some idea.

In a few of my jobs, I start the day/shift by going into the DC and eyeballing all of our equipment.  In some cases where are gear are hidden from view, I would open them up and make sure all the LED indicators are normal.

There were a few cases where my action help save some people from getting terminated.
