Redundant DHCP

Is it possible to use a Microsoft DHCP server as a primary server, and use a cisco router as an automatic failover backup in the event of an equipment failure? How?

Does the setting ip helper-address make the router ignore the broadcasts that it forwards to that address?

Thanks

Hello

Not sure about automatic failover but I suppose you can have both running at the same time just like having two designated servers.

Split the subnet allocation between the windows and cisco switch/router.

So if the server or switch/router drops you dont lose all dhcp support and then you can easy enable the other half of the dhcp scope.

The ip helper- address is a dhcp relay- It is used to forward dhcp requests from clients not locally residing on the same network segment as the dhcp server.

As broadcasts are not forwarded by routers, This relay agent assits it getting these broadcast packets to the server.
