Hi all,
Is carrier tring to put loop toward Customer site i.e CE is dangerous for customer network. Can there be any problem? We usually ask carrier to put loop toward PE but today my co-worker said putting loop facing CE is dangerous,...it's like hacking. ..Is it really?

Hi Lek,
Loop whether local or remote works on same principal.
Loop can be soft loop or hard loop.
When carrier put loop on circuit, they can do it at number of point.
They can put loop on NTU (at customer premises) or they can put loop from Exchange.
Basically when you go for loop test, the point which can be proved is that circuit is clean if you see your interface UP UP and in bracket looped.
When troubleshooting circuits, it is best to request ISP to give the loop from exchange facing your router; so that you can have your whole circuit tested from exchange.
If you use P2P link then, loop has to be applied facing both ends (one by one), to check where it is failing.
Another issue you may encounter sometimes (although very rarely) is that out of sudden, your WAN interface is in looped condition. Mostly it is due to the NTU in loop. Calling you ISP and requesting them to clear the loop will solve the issue.
Coming to the hacking doubts, there is no such possibility as loops are provided to check the physical circuit connectivity only. Definately when your circuit would be down and if you request ISP for loop; none of your office / business traffic would be able to go via that link.

I will like to call it total blasphemy...
Loop is basically your TX connected to your RX, hence what ever you sent should be getting back to you.

Hi Smitesh,
Thanks for your reply. The loop you are telling i guess basically applies for local loop.....sorry i m wrong. If carrier puts loop facing Customer router, then we would probably see loop in the router if everything is fine but does it bring any security issue to the router.
Also if you have knowledge about this troubleshooting, i would appreciate if you share your own experiences too.
At the meantime, i would investigate on my own too:)
