In this week’s edition of Tech News of the Week, we will look at a bit of tech history that happened this week several decades ago. On 4 October 1957, the first man-made satellite to orbit the Earth was launched. The launch of the Sputnik 1 satellite was the beginning of another type of launch, the Space Age.
The 23” diameter, 184-pound satellite cruised at about 18,000 miles per hour. Over its three-month orbit, it made 1,440 orbits around the Earth before reentering our atmosphere and burning up. While there were four more Sputnik space missions, Sputnik 1 brought the world into an era of space exploration.
