YEP! Everything looked ok in the config but the wizard on one end put AES as policy so MD5 was being ignored.
I'm now getting a PAYLOAD_MALFORMED message though, followed by Information Exchange processing failed.

Actually I thought I was in debugging level but was only informational. On debug level I also have this in the logs:

It turns out it was a PC (Mac) issue, but a strange one at that. For some reason changing the subnet mask from 255.255.254.0 to 255.255.255.0 on one of the hosts made it reply, even though the pings were coming from a subnet well outside the netmask ...
