I ran into this using cheap serial adaptors I'd picked up from eBay (they work for everything else). Happened to try an old (but better made) on from Keyspan, and it worked perfectly.

One of the manuals (not printed, nor the PDF - I had to dig for it) has a picture of the longer arm on the front left of the unit.
