So having worked through all three vendors (Cisco, EMC & HP) I tested the passive Twin-Ax cables SFP-H10GB-CU3M-C(non-branded) from my WS-C4500X directly into a dual port HP NC552 SFP adapter. These all worked without issue.

Had the same problem with my hosted ASA and a mail relay sitting behind it. Disabling the ESMTP policy resolved the problem as the "allow-tls" command was "dated" according to my hosted provider.
