When you say embedded LSI Raid, are you referring to the software raid controller thats just part of the motherboard?If so, VMware does not support software raid. You'll need to build the VD with a hardware raid controller.
If I understand you correctly, you are asking if you can keep your M1 blades at a lower firmware level and if so, how low. If so, check out table 2 on the 2.2 release notes:
