You will need to get the debugs from both sides. But from the time you say the connection stays up. I would guess that DPDs are not being answered. Debugs would tell you this. Anything chage?

If I remember correctly PIX version 7.0 will let you do this. Or, you can configure a direct lan2lan to each pixes. Just remember you will have to change the set peer and the isakmp key every time the ip changes. Anther option is, get some routers...
I would be guessing but sounds like a nat or a routing issue. I would need to see a "show cry ip sa" from both pixes. A config from both pixes would be helpful too.
