There must be a checkbox I am missing, but how can I set it so I can use the client standalone instead of always browing to the VPN web page?

By default, the ASA is configured to left the application installed on the client.

The option to modify this behavior is under:

Configuration > Remote Access VPN > Network (Client) Access > Group Policies>Advanced>Anyconnect Client

The one you are looking for is the one that says: "Keep Installer on Client System".
