Cisco VPN Client failing

Same notebook. Same VPN client. No changes.

Suddenly stops working.

When attempted to be started after a fresh reboot, the VPN Client briefly

displays on the screen, says Installing Logging, then Configuring Interface

Settings. At that point, it would usually stop on a window showing all the

VPN choices.

Now, it exits immediately with no connection.

Please advise. This VPN worked fine one day ago.

By no changes, i assume that you haven't installed any other application on the notebook when the vpn client stops working.

Can you pls share the full logs so we can see if we stop anything that might help. Thanks.

I do not know where the logs reside.

Recall that the VPN Client app won't start.

Where do the physical logs reside on the drive?

It is a Windows PC.

Ahh, you mention no connection, so i thought you mean can't connect.

so it won't even display the VPN Client application, right.

Which Windows OS is it, and what version of VPN Client are you running?

Have you tried to uninstall and reload the machine and re-install it?

Cisco VPN version is 5.0.07.0290 and was on 6/30/2011

Damaged on September 14th after 3 Windows security patches auto-installed.

The version is Windows 7 Professional.

I used this to fix it:

http://weblogs.asp.net/bhouse/archive/2009/01/15/how-to-successfully-install-cisco-vpn-client-on-windows-7.aspx

then this:

https://supportforums.cisco.com/thread/2082579

And last a reboot, run of VPN Client, and then using to connect and to work.

Looks like there are bugs in Cisco VPN preventing itself from Windows-inflicted. Doesn't it write-protect itself?

I would have assumed it would have taken all protective measures considering it is running on an insecure system

(Windows) and is itself a client due to its security nature and the proclivities of modern hackers to disengage

communications and security subsystems.

Thanks for sharing the information on how to fix it, Stuart. Much appreciated. This will help other forum users who might be experiencing the same issue.

FYI, Cisco VPN Client is going EOL soon:

What is replacing Cisco VPN Client and why is it better?

Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client - it supports both SSL and IPSec VPN Client (IKEv2).

AnyConnect also comes with other modules (Web Security, Wireless, etc).

Here is the datasheet for your reference:
