IOS 12.3(1) to VPN Client

On the VPN client (4.01 or 3.6) I have the following error:

Invalid SPI size (PayloadNotify:116)

Received malformed message or negotiation no longer active (message id:0x00000000)

The hardware is a MRP 200. I have tried with aes, des and 3des. Same error....

There are a couple of things that you could look into. For example, are there any devices located between the router and the client, which are NATting. Are the policies configured on the two ends the same. Also, there are certain restrictions on running AES. Make sure you are not running into those.
