If I remember correctly, the download happens, it gets put into a separate partition, configs get migrated and then it boots into the upgraded partition.

It is best to organize a maintenance window, to avoid download disruption from the upgrades server during the process. Network connectivity disruptions can cause upgrade timeouts, resulting in upgrade failures.
