I am using the stand-alone Webex application. Do the instructions that I quoted apply to only the Webex website?

No, they're referring to your Webex meeting site.

Do you use a paid subscription/company account or just a free account?

I guess it’s a free account. I am not aware of anyone in the office paying for an account.

Do we have to pay in order to use virtual backgrounds?

Nope, but if you had a paid account and a Control Hub managed meeting site your administrator might have disabled the usage of virtual backgrounds -- that's why I've been asking..

I'm not a mac user, therefore I cannot check how it behaves on that OS. It was just a hint what other issue it could be..
