ACI refresh from 1st gen to 3rd gen

Hi

We are getting around to replacing our ACI switches. These are 1st gen switches and we are replacing them with 3rd gen switches. I've seen and read through the "Upgrading the Switch Hardware" guide at https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/dcn/aci/apic/all/apic-installation-aci-upgrade-downgrade/Cisco-APIC-Installation-ACI-Upgrade-Downgrade-Guide/m-upgrading-the-switch-hardware.pdf which is about installing 2nd gen switches. Can anyone confirm that the process and steps would be the same for installing 3rd gen switches?

We currently run v.4.2.7f, which the new switches do not support. So I plan to upgrade the fabric to 5.2.8e and have the switches converted to ACI mode with 5.2.8e before connecting them. The steps should be:

1. Upgrade the APICs to 5.2.8e
2. Replace Spine1 with a new Spine
3. Replace Spine2 with a new Spine
4. Replace Leaf switches connected to Spine1
5. Replace Leaf switches connected to Spine2

We have several VPCs on the leaf switches, so if I replace 1 member of the vPC pair, the servers should stil have access through the 2nd member. I undertand the vPC will not come up on the new member 1 until I switch off member 2. Is my thinking correct?

Many Thanks
Roy

Hi Roysm,
Can you please share the hardware inventory of Gen1 and Gen3?

Just to add "Generation 1 switches are compatible only with other Generation 1 Switches"

Thanks
