Cisco ACI Leaf - Decommission vs Remove From Controller

Hello all,

This question has been asked in other places but I feel like there's never a solid answer on what these commands technically do.

For Remove From Controller , things I've heard are:

  • Remove From Controller
    • Wipes the switch itself and removes it from the fabric.
    • Completely removes the node from the ACI fabric and the serial number is disassociated from the Node ID.
      • Yet I'm not sure what this technically means - "removes the node from the ACI fabric" yet the config for the node still remains. Is this referring to the fabricNode object actually being deleted?

I haven't seen anything on what Decommission actually does.

Does anyone know what the Decommission and Remove From Controller commands actually/technically do?

Hello @vv0bbLeS ,

Decommission: when you want to temporarily put the node out of service and make it invisible in the fabric, like when you want to swap it with another switch. The config is preserved on the APIC,

Remove From Controller: the node config is wiped out on the node itself and on the ACI fabric; There is no trace of the switch anmore on the ACI fabric.
