Multicast Design on Multipod Fabric.

Hello all,

We have a deployed and running Multipod ACI Fabric ( POD ).

We  have enabled Multicast in the Fabric.

The Fabric has L3out in each POD.

I would like to know if a Design where the ASM RP are outside the fabric could work correctly in our Multi Pod Fabric.

Thank you

Dear @stefanodichio

  • In Multi-PoD setup, Multicast PIM-Bidir is configured for handling Inter-Pod Layer 2 BUM Traffic.
  • Multicast PIM Bidir is configured on IPN devices with at least /15 Mask.
  • PIM-RP is configured in the VRF on IPN devices.

If you agree with the above statement, then give your thumps up and I will reply to your actual requirement.

Multipod should be fine.  We're doing it.  The gotcha for us was that all sources must be in the same VRF as the RP, which means your L3Out will need to be in the same VRF as your sources.  Doc Ref:  https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/dcn/aci/apic/5x/l3-configuration/cisco-apic-layer-3-networking-configuration-guide-52x/ip-multicast-layer3-config-52x.html#id_83295

Look for John Weston's CiscoLive sessions on multicast in ACI.  There are a few pretty important things to know, and he has some good info specifically around optimizing multicast on your border leaf switches in a multipod environment.

As per my findings, John Weston has below bricks in Cisco Live:

  • ACI Multi-Site Architecture and Deployment - BRKDCN-2980
  • Cisco ACI Multi-Pod Design and Deployment - BRKDCN-2949
Which one are you referring to?
