CSS11503 with I/O modules

I am looking at a 11503 but it only has a Switch Control Module in Slot1.

Don't I have to have a I/O (ie Ethernet) module in Slot2/3 for the web servers to be connected?

Or can the webservers connect via a Catalyst connected to the SCM? (Foundry SLB allows this)

Hi Jason -

The backend servers are not required to be directly connected to the CSS.

~Zach

AS mentioned by Zach you can use the SCM to configure a trunk and have multiple vlans.

I just would like to mention that the CSS has a distributed architecture.

So the more modules you have the more performance you get.

That's why we even sell SAM module with no ports.

These modules are just there to assist in the traffic switching.

An I/O module is a SAM plus some fastethernet ports.

It could be usefull to have more modules if you plan to support a lot of traffic.

Regards,

Gilles.

Hi,

as I see the 11503 can only have SCM module with 2 GB ports (without additional FE/GB ports) - first for link to the Catalyst for frontend (using 802.1q VLANs) and the second GB for the connection to the Catalyst on the backend server farm (again using vlans).

What about adding the SSL module to the basic (one SCM/2GB) config? Does it change anything? Will it work with backend servers connected to the catalyst via GB link?

you can add the ssl module to a 11503 with only an SCM.

The SSL module is access through the internal switch fabric. No need for additional phyiscal ports.

It does work with the gig ports.

Gilles.
