Hello,

I have got an ACE box runing c4710ace-t1k9-mz.A5_1_2.bin and i was trying to downgrade the code to A4_2_2.bin.When i tried to copy the .bin file to :image, it terminates the copying process in the middle with the following message.

Step 1:

###############################################################################################################

local: /mnt/cf/c4710ace-t1k9-mz.A4_2_2.bin: Read-only file

ACE-4710/Admin(config)# boot system image:c4710ace-t1k9-mz.A4_2_2.bin

Validating system image...

Error! failed to set boot image: bad CRC

Step 2:

As a next step, i tried to delete the .bin file and upload again, but i couldnt delete it.

ACE-4710/Admin# delete image:c4710ace-t1k9-mz.A4_2_2.bin
delete: cannot remove 'c4710ace-t1k9-mz.A4_2_2.bin': Read-only file system
ACE-4710/Admin#

So i reloaded the ACE and was able to delete the partially copied file, but the same error happenes again (step1).

I followed the below document and formatted the flash

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/interfaces_modules/services_modules/ace/vA5_1_0/configuration/administration/guide/managesw.pdf

read section

Reformatting the ACE Appliance Flash Memory

Step 3:

ACE-4710/Admin# FORMAT flash:

Warning!! This will erase everything in the compact flash

including startup configs for all the contexts and reboot

the system!!

Do you wish to proceed anyway? [yes/no]: [no] y

saving system image[c4710ace-t1k9-mz.A5_1_2.bin]

Formatting the cf.....

Format completed successfully

Restoring Image /backupimage/c4710ace-t1k9-mz.A5_1_2.bin

mount: must be superuser to use mount

cp: cannot create regular file `/mnt/cf/c4710ace-t1k9-mz.A5_1_2.bin': Permission denied

umount: /mnt/cf: not mounted

starting graceful shutdown

local: /mnt/cf/c4710ace-t1k9-mz.A4_2_2.bin: Read-only file

ACE-4710/Admin# FORMAT flash:

Final: After formatting, the device got crashed and went to GRUB> mode. ( did not boot into the original image or recovery image)

I would like to know.

1. why the copying process failed with - " local: /mnt/cf/c4710ace-t1k9-mz.A4_2_2.bin: Read-only file" message

2. why i couldnt  delete the partially copied file with out device reload -  " delete: cannot remove 'c4710ace-t1k9-mz.A4_2_2.bin': Read-only file system"

3. Why it crashed after format

Note: The image i used is not corrupted, i was able to load the same image to another box.

         No network connectivity issues.

I use local admin account for the above activity.

dir image: shows enough free space
