Upgrading CSM_SSL

Hello all.

I am going to upgrade a redundant CSM-SSL cluster from version 1.1(3) to 2.2(5). Can I do it in one shot?

Also  I am going to upgrade IOS from the 6500 (where the CSM-SSL are) from 12.2(18)SXF5 to 12.2.(33) SXI7. Is there a special order to do the upgrade? Like IOS first and CSM second?

I read that when upgrading to a new software release, you must upgrade the CSM-S image before upgrading the Cisco IOS image. Failure to do so prohibits the supervisor engine from recognizing the CSM-S. In this case, you would have to downgrade the Cisco IOS image, upgrade the CSM-S image, and then upgrade the Cisco IOS image. But I don´t understand why.

Any help would highly appreciated.

Best regards,

Joao.

Hi Joao,

You should not have any problem with this upgrade.

About the IOS, here is more information about it:

Hello Cesar.

First of all thanks for the link you provided to me.

By your response I am assuming that I have no problems when upgrading from 1.1(3) to 2.2(5). I am a litle worried since I can´t find any document regarding upgrade procedure between major upgrades, so I am assuming that I can do it. Am I right?

Regards,

Joao.

Hello Joao,

You can upgrade directly, there is no problem like Cesar said.

The CSM-S code is a combination of codes, here we have the CSM card code and the SSLM card code, in other words:

CSM-S code 1.1(3) = CSM 4.1(3) and SSLM 2.1(2)

CSM-S code 2.2(5) = CSM 4.3(5) and SSLM 2.1(13s)

As you can see the major difference is the CSM train, the SSLM card always stay in the same train the difference is the build = more bugs fixed, but no surprises.

With the CSM code we do not have problems on jumping from 4.1 to 4.3.

With that said, you can upgrade the CSM-S code without any problem.

Cheers,

Rodrigo
