I have done some initial testing with Windows Media streaming using rtsp over tcp and with some of the adaptive bitrate technologies that are out there. What I have seen is that the compression level seems to vary. I have not had the time to determine exactly what variables play into the "compressibility"/"cachability" of the media.
But I seem to consistenly get 75% to 80% compression with the content I have tested with.
