Will pushing a firmware update to the active switch also apply the firmware to the standby-hot? or does the firmware need to pushed to both switches in the stack?

Cisco StackWise Virtual setup, upgrade the active and standby switch.

IOS Xe 17.3.5 or later are stable, if you upgrading from OLDER version, may be ROMMON may required upgrade.

Depends if this is Install Mode or Bundle Mode. 

In Install Mode, the BIN file is pushed to the standby pair and the packages are extracted invidividually.
