MPLS on Catalyst 3850 with IOS 16.06.04

brahende

I'm new to MPLS, and I feel like I'm missing something that is probably obvious.

I have seen several posts and confirmations that any code of 16.6.X should have MPLS capabilities.  I have also found these document that makes me believe what I'm trying should work:

https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/switches/lan/catalyst3850/software/release/16-6/configuration_guide/mpls/b_166_mpls_3850_cg/b_166_mpls_3850_cg_chapter_01001.html

https://www.cisco.com/c/dam/en/us/td/docs/switches/lan/catalyst3850/software/release/16-3/workflows/MPLS-feature-guide-1631.pdf

The global commands that start with MPLS as well as the interface commands for MPLS do not appear to be recognized by the switch.

For global:  mpls label range / mpls label protocol ldp

for specific interface : mpls ip

Is there something else I have to do to enable MPLS for this switch?

 Thanks,

Hi,

Could you please let me know how is 3850 performance for MPLS.

I am planning to deploy 3850 stack switches in our network as P.

But would like to know if you see any performance  issue.

Thanks

Saurav

we do not see any performance issue here, by the cat 3850 getting to retire soon, better invest on Cat 9K switch?

by the way what kind of performance issue we are considering here?

Hi Balaji,

Thanks for reply.

When I say performance more related to forwarding the packets.

We are going to use  as stack switches (total 48 ports)  and terminate Mikrotik PE's on this.

So, just wondering we should not see any load issue or forwarding issue  in production.

Just want to make sure covering all aspect before putting in production.

Do you think using as P router and"stack switches" should not cause any issue ?

Thanks

Saurav

3850 can be used as a switch in the use case of MPLS, but what kind of traffic are we considering here we do not know

is this your edge network or you as a service provider ? since you mentioned P and Pe here ?

Performance needs to be calculated end to end, not one side. Do you have any high-level diagrams?

Note: this is a more new topic suggest opening a new thread with information to assists better.

How to Ask The Cisco Community for Help

Hi Balaji,

I have opened a new thread and uploaded HLD also.

https://community.cisco.com/t5/mpls/mpls-on-cisco-3850/m-p/4574578#M23767

You are a "small ISP" and you insist on using a 3850 as PE, a platform known for very conservative memory and CPU?

Good luck with that.
