Upgrade C9200-24P to latest recommended version

Hello,

I am planning to upgrade a couple of C9200-24P switches to the latest recommended version, Dublin-17.12.4. Currently, the switches are running Bengaluru 17.06.03.

Could you please confirm if there is a specific upgrade path I should follow, or if a direct upgrade to the latest version is supported? I wasn’t able to find this information in the release notes, but I wanted to verify before proceeding.

Thank you for your guidance.

Regards,

Arjun

@ArjunRajeev

You can go from your version to 17.12.4 with no issue.  You can upgrade from version 16 direct to 17.

"For C9200 we can upgrade directly from 16. x.x to 17. x.x train or within 17. x.x train in INSTALL and BUNDLE mode. Please refer to the release notes of the target IOS which is found externally for more understanding."

Upgrading Catalyst 9200 switches - Cisco

Just upgrade the ROMMON to 17.12.1r [FC3] as good practice.

Hello Flavio,

Thank you for your prompt response.

Regarding the ROMMON, I wanted to clarify: wouldn't it automatically upgrade to the latest compatible version (in this case - 17.12.1r [FC3]) along with the IOS upgrade, or is a separate ROMMON upgrade required prior to upgrading the IOS? If a separate upgrade is necessary, could you kindly guide me on how to perform it? The current ROMMON version is 17.9.1r [FC8]

Thank you for your assistance.

ROM: IOS-XE ROMMON
BOOTLDR: System Bootstrap, Version 17.9.1r [FC8], RELEASE SOFTWARE (P)

Good point @ArjunRajeev  ROMMON will upgrade along with the IOS. I think stating with version 17.6 Cisco has integrated the ROMMON with IOS install.

Automatic Boot Loader Upgrade

When you upgrade from the existing release on your switch to a later or newer release for the first time, the boot loader may be automatically upgraded, based on the hardware version of the switch. If the boot loader is automatically upgraded, it will take effect on the next reload. If you go back to the older release after this, the boot loader is not downgraded. The updated boot loader supports all previous releases.

To know the bootloader version that applies to every major and maintenance release, see Boot Loader Versions.
