What support for mark-up in the TTS text is there?
If my browser supportts it, can I use SSML tags like <emphasis> and <phoneme>

Hello,

Due to browser differences on SSML implementation, TTS markup is supported by enclosing all TTS content including markup within CDATA. This is done on the following browsers: VWS 2.0, NVP, VoiceGenie with Nuance 8 & VoiceGenie with BBN. The actual behavior of the TTS content will depend on the browser/TTS engine rendering of the text enclosed within CDATA. Audium is working on enhanced TTS markup support in future versions.

Regards,

Joe

I am trying to use CDATA to include SSML in my TTS playback but the tts engine (ScanSoft on VoiceGenie) always spells back the CDATA and SSML markup. Here is my sample TTS:

Thanks

Hi,

Depending on what gateway adapter you are using, the TTS content may or may not be enclosed within CDATA automatically by the Audium server. For those gateway adapters that have this feature, SSML markup may be used within the builder for TTS configuration. The text content with tags will then be put into the prompt as CDATA. For those gatewayadapters that do not have this behavior (the SpeechGenie adapter is one of them), you will not be able to define SSML markup or CDATA content as the builder will escape certain characters. This will prevent the SSML markup from being rendered appropriately in the vxml generated.

One option you have if you still want to use SSML markup for TTS is to use a VXML insert element where you are free to define the vxml as needed. In the next version of Audium, enhanced SSML support will be addressed so that is an option on those browser configurations that support it.

Regards,
Michael

Do you have a list of which gateway adapters allow SSML? At the very least, does the OSB adapter allow it? From my tests, it seems the answer is no.

Hi joel,

Currently VoiceGenie 5.9.1 adapter for Audium 3.3 supports SSML. OSB adapter for Audium 3.3 does not support SSML.

Hi,

Just wanted to point something out that I noticed (Studio v3.4 + CVP 3.0 with OSR 2.0 and Nuance 8.5 gateway adapters) regarding the inclusion of SSML tags in TTS strings... it seems that when you enter a static TTS string including SSML tags in the "TTS" dialogue box of the "Audio" tab the TTS string is rendered by the Audium server verbatim (even without enclosing the TTS string in CDATA tags) but when you store a dynamically generated TTS string in element data, the Audium server escapes all HTML entities (e.g. "<">" are rendered as "<" and ">", etc) rendering any markup you added to your TTS string useless (as it is read back verbatim). Is there any particular reason for this inconsistency?

Cheers,

Peter

Hi Peter,

Thank you for the feedback. I have entered this problem into our internal issue-tracking system for possible inclusion in a future release.

Vance
