Introduction

Upgrading the ACE software allows you to take advantage of new features and bug fixes. To minimize any disruption to existing network traffic during a software upgrade or downgrade, make sure to deploy your ACE appliances in a redundant configuration. Remember to change the default Admin password and the default www user password before starting the upgrade. It is also strongly recommended that you create a checkpoint in the running-configuration file of each context in your ACE.
This document describes the situation where you get the error EXT3-fs while upgrading your ACE device.

Requirements

Basic understanding of working of Cisco ACE and familiarity with ACE CLI commands.

Problem

User is trying to upgrade the ACE but getting following errors.

EXT3-fs error (device loop3): ext3_journal_start_sb: Detected aborted journal
EXT3-fs error (device loop3) in start_transaction: Journal has aborted

The error shows up after the file is copied and is ready for upgrade.

Description

The above shown error is a file system error, it means that the flash is corrupted or has some bad sector. This is usually resolved by formatting the flash drive and then installing the system software image.

Resolution

Make sure to take system backup before this process. Follow these steps from the Managing ACE Software guide under section Reformatting the ACE Module Flash Memory.
To format the device flash enter command "format disk0:".

After you reformat the Flash memory, perform the following actions:
• Reinstall the ACE appliance software image by using the copy image: command (see the Release Note, Cisco ACE 4700 Series Application Control Engine Appliance).

• Reinstall the ACE appliance license by using the license install command (see Chapter 4, Managing ACE Software Licenses).

• Import the startup and running-configuration files into the associated context by using the copy command (see the “Copying Configuration Files from a Remote Server” section).

• Import SSL certificate files and key pair files into the associated context using by the crypto import command (see the SSL Guide, Cisco ACE Application Control Engine)
