Headset not working with IP phone

Hello

I have a Cisco IP Phone 7841.

I am trying to connect it to Apple earbuds or a Bose 35 headset. Since they have a microphone and sound jack I have an RJ9 adapter that goes between the headphones/microphone and the phone. 

On mute I can listen to a phone call with no problems.  When I unmute, a wine noise is heard on both ends of the conversation.  Also no on can hear me talk so my audio is not going out.

Any thoughts on how to make earbuds or Bose headset work?  Thanks

Thanks, I am using this adaptor (I am open to get a different adaptor if that is what I need).

I have read that the newer 78xx and 88xx series CISCO IP phone voltage is not compatible with a straight adaptor.  Any ideas on how to get the Bose 35 headphones to work with the CISCO 7835??
