Adding Missing WhatsApp-like Features to Cisco Jabber On-Prem with CUC

Hello,

I am using Cisco Jabber connected to our on-premises CUCM in my organization.
I have noticed that some features available in WhatsApp are missing, such as:

  • Message read and delivery receipts

  • Automatic group deletion after disconnection

  • No audio/video conferencing

  • Requirement for prior approval before joining a group

  • File transfer limited to a single recipient

Is there any way to add these features to Cisco Jabber on-prem?
Or is there an alternative on-prem solution that offers these missing features while remaining interoperable with CUCM?

Jabber and WhatsApp are generationally different products; you’re comparing apples & oranges. Cisco’s equivalent is the Webex app which does support CUCM/CUC on-premises calling but requires cloud-provided functionality as well. Alternatives to Jabber were AIM, YIM, and MS Lync/S4B.

Some of that functionality exists though. Audio/video conference calls are possible with Cisco Meeting Server integrated to CUCM. Group chats are as ephemeral as 1:1 chats unless you create a persistent chat room. Persistent chat rooms support moderation to control entry if the room type is set to restricted. And file transfers only work 1:1 unless you configure a managed file transfer server to function as a relay.

Thank you very much for your detailed clarifications, this helps me better understand the positioning of Jabber compared to Webex and the additional components like Cisco Meeting Server or persistent chat rooms.

One more question: is there any way to enable message read and delivery receipts in Jabber on-prem, either natively or through integration with another solution?

Thanks again for your support.
