Multicast in VPN with MPLS Segment Routing

Mario Rosi

Someone has any suggestions about which solution could be used to implement multicast in VPN when the overlay plane is MPLS Segment routing (and Not LDP, and NOT LDP want to be re-introduced?... we are migrating a MPLS LDP backbone to MPLS SR :))

If you have any presentations or white papers to share, it should be very appreciated.

Thanks,

Mario

Hi @Mario Rosi ,

It is possible to run LDP for multicast (mLDP) without running LDP for unicast. In the presentation you mentioned before, it was mentioned as the preferred solution.

Harold

Reading here https://www.ciscolive.com/c/dam/r/ciscolive/emea/docs/2020/pdf/BRKIPM-2249.pdf it looks that BIER is a easy protocol to implement, supported on XR since 7.3.1.

Do you know if NCS 5500 platform implement it? (and N540 as well?)

Take a BIER @Mario Rosi

As NCS 5500 utilize ios XR too then yes!

Thanks M02@rt37!

Do you have any links showing how to implement it (configurations)? I'm not finding nothing except the theory (i.e. https://learning.oreilly.com/videos/fundamentals-of-ip/9780135240649/9780135240649-FIPM_01_10_02/)!

I'd test it on XR on my EVE-NG environment before going to propose to customer!

Thanks

Thanks M02@rt37 , I had seen that link but unfortunately it look no working any longer.

…or better, the link inside with the labs is no working (Check it out here: https://dcloud-cms.cisco.com/demo/bier_v2)

Hi @Mario Rosi ,

The CiscoLive presentation you are referring to only says that it was targeted for 7.3.1 at the end of 2020. As far as I know, there is no official support for BIER on any platform.

Please refer to the following CiscoLive presentation for some alternatives:

Thanks @Harold Ritter for your feedback; so M02@rt37 actually that’s the reason why the link is missing, no supported in the end the framework BIER!

at this point I come back at my original question:

“…which solution could be used in your opinion to implement multicast in VPN when the overlay plane is MPLS Segment routing (and Not LDP for unicast is there)?... we are migrating a MPLS LDP backbone to MPLS SR.

any comment is very appreciated!

@Mario Rosi@Harold Ritter;

traditionnal PIM ?

I've found video about nanog documentation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4DTd1KTvgM0

Segment Routing is getting more and more deployed in production networks now, starting with unicast. As more operators moving or planning to move to SR, those with multicast requirements need to consider what options they have for multicast. This presentation looks at SR principals and ...
