I have not touched any portal customization for years, and even back in the bad old days, getting the code to work was a job for someone with a good understanding of java/jQuery. In my recollection, the challenge with customised code was that it got harder to do, as the clients improved their security, and vendors like Apple will restrict what can be done inside the CNA (Captive Networking Assistant). It looks like a browser, but it's not a full-blown browser.
